Deaf Awareness Training

Deaf Awareness Training

Did you know there are more than 10 million people in the UK with some form of hearing loss, or one in six of the population?

We do not know exactly how many people use BSL (British Sign Language), but estimates of the number of Deaf signers who use it as their first language range from 30,000 to 70,000. Many hearing people also know some BSL because they might have family members, friends or colleagues who are Deaf, and recent figures from the British Deaf Association suggest that on any day up to 250,000 people use some BSL.

Manchester Deaf Centre provides Deaf Awareness Training to:

  • Individuals
  • Public sector organisations
  • Voluntary sector organisations
  • Private/corporate sector

Our training courses will improve your confidence and communication skills when meeting people who are D/deaf or have a hearing loss.

We offer a range of training opportunities with flexible course options to meet the specific requirements of your organisation. All of our trainers are Deaf themselves and use British Sign Language (BSL) as their first language. This means they are able to bring to bear their personal experience of the barriers D/deaf people face every day, giving you an immersive training experience.

Our Deaf Awareness Training tutors can also help you and your organisations to offer equal and accessible services to Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Deafblind people.

The course will help you to develop a full understanding of the difference between Deaf people who use speech and Deaf people who use Sign Language.  You will explore barriers which may limit Deaf people’s opportunities, and what technical / human aids to communication are appropriate to meet the different needs of Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Deafblind people.
