Manchester Deaf Centre was established in 1846 as ‘Manchester Institute for the Deaf’. It changed its name in 1990 to Manchester Deaf Centre and is a Limited Company with Charitable Status. It is run by a deaf-led board of trustees including deaf, hearing, deafened and hard of hearing members.
The Deaf Centre moved from Grosvenor Street to new premises in Crawford House, Booth Street East in 1974. The building is now in need of a complete refurbishment. The first part of the work has been completed and we are actively fundraising to enable us to complete this work. The Deaf Centre receives revenue funding from Manchester City Council but relies on donations to maintain and expand the range of services we can offer. The Centre is used by around 500 people each week accross age range from our new Parent and Toddler Group to our 50 Plus Group and all ages in between. Our users are either profoundly deaf, deaf-blind, hard of hearing or suffering from tinnitus. Most communicate using British Sign Language as their first language. Many have been accessing our services and social activities for many years and for them we have a safe and welcoming venue where they can socialise with their deaf counterparts and increasingly interact with and particpate in a range of activities with hearing peers. If you would like to discuss ways you can help us please email or telephone 0161 273 3415 (voice/minicom) or text 07917 152778.
