Drop-in Communication, Advice & Advocacy Services

Manchester Deaf Centre’s volunteer-led Drop-in Communication and Advice Service runs every Thursday between 15:00-17:00.

Working closely with Manchester City Council’s Sensory Team (who are also based at Crawford House), our volunteer BSL interpreters and Communication Support Workers are on hand to assist you in translating letters from English-BSL (and vice versa), make phone calls, create emails, book appointments, request interpreters and much more!

If they are not able to help  you with your query, they will signpost you to the right person!

To access this service, just drop-in to Manchester Deaf Centre and inquire at reception!

  • Legal Advice

Working in partnership with the University of Manchester Law School, we are also able to arrange for law students to give free legal advice for simple legal issues. This service is by appointment only. Please contact our Volunteer Engagement Officer who will be able to make an appointment for you.

  • Deaf Advocacy Service

We also host a weekly advocacy service (11:00-15:00) provided by our partner charity, Network Circle of Deafness.  This service can help you to:

  • Apply for benefits
  • Medical forms for benefits
  • Bill and banking problems
  • Setting up direct debits
  • Applying for bus passes and blue badges
  • Council tax/housing benefit problems
  • Making a complaint
  • Employment problems/complaints
  • Finding a solicitor/accessing legal aid (if available)

You can be assured that your information is held in strict confidence.  We can organise access to a  volunteer BSL interpreter or Communication Support Workers if you need one.  We operate an appointment system for this service; you can either visit MDC and fill in a referral form or contact our Volunteer Engagement Officer who will organise an appointment for you.
