Manchester Deaf Centre – Job club has been shortlisted as a finalist for the ERSA Employability Awards 2019 in the Disability & Health Employment category.
Now in its seventh year, the ERSA Employability Awards celebrate best practice across the employment support sector and seek to demonstrate the day-to-day hard work and dedication of those working to improve the lives of jobseekers, communities and the wider workforce.
Manchester Deaf Centre – Job clubhas supported 344people to transform their lives since 2015and has beennominated for the Disability and Health Employment award, having demonstrably raised the profile of jobseekers with disabilities and health conditions with employers, challenging and overcoming traditional objections and prejudices.
ERSA received over 150 entries from across the UK. This year’s submissions were judged by an all-star panel consisting of internationally recognised political thinker and Director of ResPublica, Phillip Blond, editor of The Sun’s employment page, Jane Hamilton, senior civil servant at the Department for Work and Pensions, Mark Staley, and Winner of Adviser of the Year 2018, Tanya Weston of Genius Within.
As a successful finalist, Manchester Deaf Centre – Job clubwill attend a special ceremony on 20 June with the Minister for Employment, Alok Sharma MP.
Richard Jones, Executive Director, Manchester Deaf Centre said: “The Manchester Deaf Centre is exceptionally proud to have its bespoke Employment Service recognised by such a prestigious association. Within our daily work we strive to provide a quality service to members of the wider Deaf community, addressing issues of inequality, societal apathy and stigma. There is a huge inequality in today’s labour market between deaf and hearing people, where Deaf job seekers are finding it increasingly more difficult to secure sustainable employment. Through the work of our flagship service, we endeavour to make a positive impact on the lives of the individuals we support. By recognising the systemic barriers and discriminations that are prevalent within the employment domain, the Manchester Deaf Centre serves to facilitate and strengthen the relationship between mainstream employers and the Deaf community. By changing perceptions and demonstrating a unique set of skills that are indicative of the Deaf community, we are progressively closing the gap in the labour market for the under / misrepresented members of our society.
