Deaf Arts Fundraising event

One of Manchester’s oldest charities Manchester Deaf Centre on Oxford Road will throw its doors open for an Arts Festival next month.

Film screenings, dance events and drama and poetry workshops are all on offer, and will help give an insight into what life is like for those who experience sensory loss of one kind or another.

A big focus on the day will be a talent show, so any budding Alexandra Burke’s out there should start practising!

The Deaf Centre has been supporting people with hearing and other sensory impairment for 160 years, and is used by around 500 people each week from across the North West as a focal point for socialising and education.  It also runs British Sign Language Courses.

The aim of the Arts Festival is to raise awareness of the Deaf Centre’s work, and to generate funds for its Helping Hands appeal to refurbish its buildings.

There will be stalls selling jewellery, cards and beauty makeovers, and a range of have-a-go workshops in dance, Tai Chi and creative writing will also be on offer.

Says Noel Traynor, Chief Executive Manchester Deaf Centre: “The Arts Festival is about raising awareness of deafness by looking at its language and culture. We hope that it will make people think about the barriers which Deaf people face every day, as well as showing the marvellous creativity our community offers.”

Garret Spring, Partner, Pannone LLP adds: “As specialists in personal injury and industrial accidents and disease, we see the results of noise induced hearing loss, which can have a devastating effect on people’s lives. We are delighted to support Manchester Deaf Centre in its work and this excellent arts project.”

Manchester Deaf Centre’s Arts Festival on 10 April 11am to 6pm at Crawford House, Booth Street East, M13 9GH is free to all, with donations gratefully accepted.
