Background
Manchester Deaf Centre is the largest organisation in Greater Manchester providing support services to people with hearing loss. The centre is a popular place for hard of hearing, D/deaf and deaf-blind people to access bespoke services responsive to need, providing a place to meet, find information, advice and guidance, opportunities to learn and to socialise.
Manchester Deaf Centre is also one of the leading training providers in the area for British Sign Language courses and Deaf Awareness. We are passionate about educating, promoting, and advocating for equality and inclusivity for D/deaf, deafened and hard of hearing individuals and those who are British Sign language users.
We are seeking to recruit BSL teachers to join our existing team of qualified and experienced teachers to further our outreach and delivery of BSL and Deaf Awareness courses across Manchester and beyond.

 

Main Duties:
  • Deliver deaf awareness training across various settings e.g. medical, educational, legal, voluntary, community and social enterprise settings etc.
  • Deliver Introduction to British Sign Language courses across various settings
  • Deliver British Sign Language Levels 1 - 3 courses
  • Deliver Interpreter Awareness and Inclusive Employment programmes
  • Undertake formal and informal assessments with students, preparing short course evaluation reports and inputting on continuous improvement plans
  • Work with MDC’s existing teachers to maintain and update training packages, information and resources

 

Person Specification
Service Delivery Experience:
Essential
  • Candidates must have a PGCE/equivalent or extensive teaching experience
  • Experience of teaching in various settings
  • An excellent understanding and knowledge surrounding deaf culture, deaf awareness and British Sign Language
  • Experience of working with other teachers to achieve the best outcomes
Skills:
Essential
  • Candidates must have British Sign Language Level 6 qualification or a be a Native Deaf/BSL user
  • An excellent understanding and knowledge surrounding deaf culture, deaf awareness and British Sign Language
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Ability to confidently manage own workload
  • Excellent time management
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word and database packages, and to be administratively self-servicing
  • Proficient in the use of online platforms such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams
  • Good negotiation and problem-solving skills

  • Holder of Driving Licence without endorsements and use of a car
  • Provided Deaf awareness/delivering training to external organisations
  • Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check required
