Deaf Awareness

Full Day Training - 9 hours



Our full day training can be tailored to meet the specific needs of your organisation. However, as a general guide, topics include:
  • Explanation about Deafness and D/deaf people
  • Current statistics for the UK population
  • Strategies for communicating with deaf people, including the do’s and don’ts
  • Communication skills
  • Differences between Hearing and Deaf culture
  • Differences in communication needs according to a person’s deafness
  • Technological aids and equipment
  • British Sign Language vs English
  • Communication Support, Note-taking and interpreting services at MDC
  • The Equality Act 2010: Your responsibilities
  • Simple ways you can improve your service

After the deaf awareness training, you will then receive a basic Introduction to British Sign Language. This will cover finger-spelling, names and introductions. If you wish to discuss this further please contact our Bookings Officer.
