The Level 3 Certificate in British Sign Language (BSL) meets the learning needs of those who already have competence in BSL at Level 2 and are interested in developing their skills and knowledge. Successful learners must be able to demonstrate competence at Level 3 of the UK Occupational Language Standards (Instructus 2012). This means that the learner will be able to understand and use varied BSL in a range of work and social situations.
The learner will acquire an advanced understanding of the structure and function of British Sign Language, along with insights into the Deaf Community and its culture.
This qualification is beneficial for individuals regularly interacting with Deaf individuals, such as social workers, Deaf educators, interpreters, volunteers, professionals within Deaf organisations, and educational institutions. It is also valuable for those aspiring to work within these environments or anyone seeking to enhance their proficiency in British Sign Language. More information about this course can be found on Signature's website here.
To support learners in building confidence and preparing for the full qualification, we deliver the course in two stages.
This stage runs from September to December and delivers one of the six modules from the full Level 3 accredited qualification. It is ideal for learners who have completed BSL Level 2 and are ready to take the next step, but may want to explore the Level 3 content before fully committing.
Over 10 weeks, the course focuses on:
• Language production
• Receptive skills
• An introduction to linguistics (this module will not be repeated later).
This approach helps learners grow in confidence and understand the demands of Level 3 study before continuing further.
Please note: Stage 1 is compulsory for anyone wishing to move on to Stage 2. There is no direct entry into Stage 2 without completing Stage 1 with us.
Stage 2 runs from January to December and includes the remaining five modules required to complete the full Signature-accredited Level 3 BSL qualification.
• Available only to those who have completed Stage 1 with us
• Includes access to the Signworld learning package to support your studies
• Delivered face-to-face by our qualified Deaf native BSL tutors
There is no pressure to continue after Stage 1 - the choice to progress is entirely up to you.
