If you have children aged 7+, don’t forget to book your tickets to see Stan! Stan is a new theatre show by award winning Salford-based arts company ‘Art with Heart’, which designs and delivers performances for community groups, arts organisations and schools. You can see Stan here in Manchester before the cast sets off on their tour of other venues across the UK.
Written by Sarah Emmott, Stan tells the story of Sam, a happy, dinosaur loving 8-year-old whose world turns upside down after his parents separate. As he takes himself off to the far end of the school field he meets Alex, a deaf girl with a vivid imagination – and an impressive collection of dinosaurs.
Bonding over boring packed lunches and their favourite fierce T-Rex, the pair form an unlikely friendship. When things at home become too difficult for Sam, Alex whisks him away on an astonishing adventure to meet the almighty Stan, the gigantic T-Rex at Manchester Museum.
Stan is performed in English and British Sign Language, embedding creative captions and animated dinosaurs within the set.
Art with Heart sought the help of over 200 deaf and hearing primary school children from Greater Manchester to develop the play, which positively demonstrates how we can overcome language barriers, and challenges preconceptions of deafness.
After the performance Art with Heart will run a free workshop to help young audiences to understand and explore the play's key themes.
Manchester Museum will also be popping up with some fascinating objects from the Museum’s collections, allowing you to discover more about extinct creatures.
Art with Heart are also providing a series of Deaf Awareness training sessions that will run alongside Stan’s theatre tour. Here at MDC we are delighted to be working in partnership with Art with Heart to deliver this training. The sessions are aimed at arts practitioners and facilitators who are looking to improve their understanding of deafness and deaf experience, learn communication skills, and ensure inclusivity and best practice in service delivery.
