New project to reduce domestic abuse and increase awareness and accessibility

We have recently received funding from Manchester City Council’s Homelessness Department, which will enable us to improve services for Deaf people who are experiencing domestic abuse.

The funding will enable us to:

  • Visit Domestic Abuse services, Homelessness and Safe Accommodation providers in Manchester to provide training and education in Deaf awareness, and in the cultural and communication needs of Deaf people using their services.
  • Provide training for our advocacy staff in issues relating to domestic abuse and develop a better understanding of local services available, so that our staff become more specialised in meeting the needs of people experiencing domestic abuse.
  • Work together with local service providers to improve referral routes from MDC to Domestic Abuse services and vice versa, to ensure that Deaf people in need of support receive Deaf-accessible assistance.
  • Provide Deaf community workshops aimed at raising awareness of domestic abuse, safeguarding and effective self-care.
