Sing and Sign with Manchester Camerata

Emma Arnold, Camerata in the Community Project Manager reports:

“The Sing & Sign workshops with Andy from the Manchester Deaf Centre have been a joy to be a part of. Andy, myself and composer Richard Taylor worked with 10 classes from 12 schools in south and east Manchester, with whom we have explored music making with BSL in order to create a class or school song at each workshop. Incorporating BSL at the heart of the song was really important to us, and Andy was great at involving Deaf awareness from the start of each workshop, making sure the young people knew why they were signing the songs that they had created and who it would help. We at Manchester Camerata have wanted to incorporate BSL into some of our projects for a number of years now, so getting the funding to be able to feature sign language on a par with making music was a real treat for us, and working with Manchester Deaf Centre has been a great asset to this. We hope to collaborate on more workshops and performances in the future!”
