“I just wanted to let you know how valuable the BSL course has already been after only two sessions. Last Wednesday I was volunteering at Manchester Royal Infirmary. I was stationed outside Paediatric Critical Care, monitoring the entering of parents to see their children. A mother, who happened to be deaf, came to see her son and I was able to communicate with her in BSL. I was able to greet her and ask her what her name was using signing and also asked her to spell her son’s name. It felt great being able to be inclusive and communicate using the mother’s preferred language, rather than expecting her to struggle with ‘normal’ methods of communicating, particularly at a time of stress when her child was ill.

I’ve also been using BSL with children that have learning disabilities at Jump Space where I volunteer on Thursdays. I think the parents really appreciate us making it so much easier for their children to communicate their needs to the staff and helping them to feel that we are ‘listening’ to them.
