Welcome to MDC’s new Chair of the Trustee Board, John Wareham

On behalf of all staff, trustees, and service users, we extend a very warm welcome to John Wareham, who has recently joined MDC in the role of Chair of the Board of Trustees. We are delighted that John has joined our team.

Since leaving the armed forces some thirty years ago, John has led community forums giving voice to those seldom included, managed a community business centre and learned much about enterprise. He has led third sector organisations, which have included a Council for Voluntary Service and an organisation supporting the Methodist Church – increasing the capacity of faith groups for good governance, project funding and the optimising of social impact where the need is greatest.

John has training and experience in areas such as project management, IT, accountancy, human resources, and organisational governance. He brings with him the key skills needed to lead our trustee board in setting strategic aims and plans for the Deaf Centre.

John is hard of hearing. He uses hearing aids and relies upon lip reading in noisy places. He previously learnt some BSL to Level 1 but he says that his language skills feel very rusty at the moment as he hasn’t had chance to use them in recent years; he is looking forward to brushing up his skills and learning more BSL again now that he has joined MDC. John Wareham says:

“Over the last twenty years, in various jobs, I have been lucky enough to meet and make friends with lots of people. As I really like working alongside and supporting people, this has been ideal for me. Having worked within the Deaf Community previously and being hard of hearing myself, I thought I could make a difference in volunteering to become the Chair of the Manchester Deaf Centre. I hope to be able to bring my experiences to help in providing leadership and direction for MDC to prosper in the future.” John Wareham

Trustee roles are voluntary positions, and we very much appreciate the commitment, expertise and time that all of our trustees offer to Manchester Deaf Centre. As Centre Manager, John Hesketh, says:

“John’s wide-ranging knowledge base and strong skill-set will serve our organisation well as we work hard to embrace the challenges and opportunities that currently present and establish best practice in every aspect of our operation: Board performance, needs-led service development and supportive staff/volunteer training, continuing change and inclusive improvement. There is much to do, and it’s important that all in our extended MDC family get behind the new strategy that is presently taking shape.” John Hesketh
