Children and Young People's Service update

As we emerge from what we hope was the worst of the Coronavirus pandemic, MDC are taking time to refresh and deepen our understanding of the most pressing issues, needs and priorities for hard of hearing, D/deaf and deafened children and young people – and for children of Deaf adults and siblings – in Manchester and the surrounding areas. In the meantime, we are putting our Youth Group for 6-13 year-olds, and DAVE (Deaf Active Volunteering Experience) Project for 14-25 year-olds on hold.

A summary plan for the refresh of our Children and Young People’s Services will be shared soon, together with details of how young people, parents and carers will be able to help shape the future of the programmes we offer for informal learning and recreation.

I Can Youth Club for 11–16 year olds from 17th February

Replacing Deaf MEETS for now will be a monthly Youth Club for 11-16 year-olds, starting on the evening of 17th February and meeting every third Thursday of the month thereafter.

I Can Get On for 16-24 year-olds

For D/deaf 16-24 year olds who are not in education, employment or training, our employability project – I Can Get On – pushes forward in good shape with good numbers. Early this new year, the group will be working through a series of emotional health & wellbeing activities, growing their capacity for self-care and building their resilience in what remain difficult times in the labour market and more broadly.

In February they will be getting their first insight into performance and prospective careers in the arts as they attend a theatre performance Stan, with a post-performance workshop which will explore the issues raised and connect members of the group to support as needed.

Still to come will be useful career tasters:

  • mini-apprenticeships in heritage, youth and community work and more
  • coaching in CV-writing, job applications, interviews and assessment centre presentations

These will be in partnership with The Community & Heritage CIC – and we look forward to sharing some positive outcomes and good news stories over the coming weeks and months.
