Laurie Thorpe

Children and Young People Service worker

I am delighted to work with MDC as a Child & Youth Worker within the CYPS. I am a hearing person currently learning BSL. I chose to learn BSL to help reduce the deficit between hearing and deaf communities. I previously worked as a nurse within Greater Manchester where I sincerely communicated and advocated for all people I met. I strongly believe it is essential that all individuals can express their opinions, needs, concerns, and fears easily, yet I was overtly conscious that for many, especially within the deaf community, this is often an isolating experience due to limitations of the hearing society. It is my ambition to help remove communication barriers and help facilitate healthy, safe, and happy lives. I am excited to be working with the CYPS team. The values and opportunities that MDC deliver and demonstrate, are fundamental to a just and inclusive society. Providing a creative, safe, and nurturing environment to explore new activities and issues, helps prepare and equip children and young people for the next phases of their lives which I am proud to be part of. I enjoy meeting the children, young people and families at MDC and deeply value the conversations and shared experience. In my spare time, I love gardening! I am always impressed by the beauty of the sky and colours of the landscape!
