Born deaf into a hearing family, Steve somehow slipped through the net and was brought up apart from the deaf community. He contended with communication barriers (with all the associated frustration and isolation) whilst trying to fit into the hearing world, giving him lived experience with which to empathise with other deaf people.

J​oining the WAITE Wellbeing group as a client just after COVID he found new confidence and belonging at MDC, becoming a volunteer and then accepting a paid role helping to lead the group. Further opportunities were offered and he has since worked in employment support, advocacy, fundraising and now compiiance management roles.

Outside of work he has recently discovered a love for drumming, enjoying the percussion instruments accessible through the vibrational and tactile feedback. He recently joined two Brazilian samba drum bands and practices with them weekly.
